With the ever increasing population in the world, health needs of people have also increased. There is an increase in the market for doctors, pharmacists, nurse etc. but the major increase is seen in the demand for technicians especially ultrasound diagnostic technicians.

Ultrasound diagnostic imaging is rapidly emerging on the face of the health industry. The ultrasound technicians are in more demand than they have ever been and this demand is increasing constantly. Now more and more institutes are providing training to the people who aspire to be diagnostic technicians. This is a full course and must be undertaken if one wants to earn a respectable living.

Among the cities where ultrasound technician courses are offered, New Jersey is very prominent. It has more than 15 highly recommended schools that offer ultrasound technician courses. The reason why the schools are in a greater number here is because New Jersey is close to many big cities including Philadelphia and New York. There is easy access to these cities and hence, the demand is even more. The population of the region is also quite substantial with a huge market for ultrasonography technicians.

The Ultrasound technician schools in New Jersey offer all sorts of programs related to diagnostic imaging. The give certificates and associated degrees to those who take up their courses. General training and Bachelor’s degree are also offered. The courses are not restricted to just ultrasound imaging but may include radiography, sonography or MRI technology.

Another attractive feature of studying diagnostic imaging at ultrasound technician schools in New Jersey is that the annual income of an ultrasound technician here is approximately $68,590. This is even more than the cardiovascular and radiologic technicians. Even fresh ultrasound technicians roughly make $30,000 during their very first year of job. Also, the demand for such technicians is very high in the state of New Jersey which currently employs almost 2000 ultrasound technicians.

Although there are no licensing requirements to practice ultrasonography in New Jersey, it is highly recommended that one at least attends a short course regarding this field that enables them to attain a certificate. Certificates from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) are highly valuable and give weightage to your resume. The ultrasound technician schools in New Jersey are also a sure way of attaining a certificate and getting the basic knowledge about ultrasonography from a professional. Theyalso help you to refresh your previous knowledge.

Furthermore, the job of an ultrasound technician is not merely running the machine and performing the diagnostic test. It is more than this and it is precisely the reason why the need for ultrasound technician courses arose. The duty of an ultrasound technician is to tell the patient what they are doing and what will the obtained results signify. They also have to change their patient’s postures to obtain better images. All this and more is taught at the ultrasound technician schools in New Jersey. Few famous ultrasound technician schools in New Jersey include Pima Medical Institute, Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey etc.

While receiving this certification, it also allows the ultrasound technicians to specialize in using sonography technology in certain areas of the body like the abdomen or chest. Those who have gone through a training program must prove that they are qualified so that they can proceed to take the exam, which must be passed in order to acquire the certificate.

Average Ultrasound Technician Salary

The profession of ultrasound technicians proves to be quite high paying and sonographers are in highly in demand within the medical and healthcare field. While there are variety of factors that can affect the salary that an ultrasound technician can eventually earn. However, a maximum salary of $74,000 per year or $23 per hour can be earned by trained, qualified and certified ultrasound technicians. Therefore individuals who also want to earn this much while working in this field should start making preparations to receive ultrasound technician training.

Ultrasound is a type of medical imaging technology which uses high frequency sound waves to generate precise images of the internal organs and structures in the body. It is used to visualize tendons, muscles and to capture the size, structure and any pathological lesions of internal organs.

Ultrasound is a type of sound pressure which has a frequency more than the limits of human ears. Thus it cannot be heard by the humans under normal circumstances.
The sound waves are beamed into a specific part of the body by a transducer. These sound waves strike the tissues, bones and body fluid and then bounce back very much similar to echoes. The bounced waves are then recorded and converted into pictures of the structure underneath by the compuer. Thus it helps to visualize the structures under the skin in a non-invasive manner. This technique is similar to that used by whales, dolphins and bat for hunting and also by the sonars on the boat to see the bottom of the ocean.

Ultrasound technology is being used since last 50-60 years by sonographers and radiologists for imaging of the human body structures and aid in the diagnosis of various medical problems.
As it is a non-invasive procedure and does not utilize ionizing radiation like in x-rays or CT scans, it is considered one of the safest diagnostic procedures.
The type of ultrasound that is used most often combines different still pictures to show the movement similar to the single frames which make movie. This is known as real time ultrasound.

Initially the ultrasound technology was used mainly by the obstetrician to assess the growth and development of the baby in the mother’s womb during pregnancy. But with the advancement in technologies, ultrasound is now helpful in creating the 3D(dimensional) and 4D images of the bodily structures. This has lead to its implication in a wide variety of fields like checking of the thyroid gland, diagnosing gallbladder disease, studying the heart chambers, diagnosing certain types of infection and cancer, evaluating any abnormalities in the muscles, tendon, prostate, scrotum or testis. It is also being use in guiding a needle biopsy or for the biopsy and treatment of a tumor.

A special ultrasound technique developed to evaluate the blood flow through the body’s major arteries and veins of the legs, arms, neck, abdomen etc. is called as Doppler ultrasound. This is based on the principle of Doppler effect and thus measures the frequency change of the echoes for calculating the speed with which an object is moving. It is used mostly for measuring the blood flow rate through the major arteries and heart. Similarly by measuring the blood flow and degree of blockage in the carotid arteries,it can predict the potential risk for future stroke.
Although ultrasound is a useful tool, it has certain limitations. As the sound cannot travel well through bone or air, ultrasound is not effective in imaging parts of the body that have gas in them or that are obscured by bone. For this conditions, various other procedures are available.

However these days ultrasound is increasingly being used in various trauma and first aid cases, with emergency ultrasound being used by several EMT response teams.

Ultrasound Technicians use various special instruments and tools (such as transducer) to produce images of human body parts. The process involves transmitting of high frequency sound waves in a specific part of the human body and then the echoes of these waves are converted into visual images. These images are used by physicians for diagnosis and interpretation. They work in various medical fields such as medical labs, hospitals, physicians’ offices, etc. Due to the importance of their work, Ultrasound Technicians are highly valued in the medical industry and are paid above average salaries. Due to the decent pay and great benefits, people all over the world are choosing it as their profession. Demand of Ultrasound Technicians is at all time high and this growth is expected to continue in coming years too. This career also promises a stable and decent growth even in a weak economy.

Ultrasound Technicians are paid one of the highest salaries in the medical profession. They are paid higher than any other medical technician such as X-ray technician, surgical technician, etc. Their salary varies from $40,000 per year to $90,000 per year. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary of an Ultrasound Technician in 2010 was around $65,000 per year. People having less than one year of experience are normally paid around $40,000. They are also paid on hourly basis. Starting from $19, the pay can go upto $26 per hour.

There are many factors on which the salary of an Ultrasound Technician depends. Such as -
1. Educational Qualifications – due to increase in the number of people opting for this profession, the competition between them is also increasing. Hence, people with higher educational qualifications are given preference over others. To enter into this profession, one can opt for a two-year associate degree course after his high school graduation. After this, getting a 4-year bachelor’s degree is also an option which will give you an insight depth of this field as well as the risk taking ability necessary to face challenging tasks in this profession. Having a bachelor’s degree is a big plus for your career and guarantees a higher pay.

2. Work experience – like any other field or career, work experience is a crucial factor that influences your pay. Higher the work experience, higher will be the salary. However, in medical industry, work experience is given more weight-age because the amount of work experience shows your credibility and expertise in the field. An amateur ultrasound technician is paid around $40,000 per year while an experienced one can pay as much as $85,000 per year.

3. Area of Specialization – your work domain is another very important factor that decides the level of your pay. For example – People who are expert in dealing with vital organs of the body are paid more than those who work on relatively less difficult parts.

4. Geographic Location – This factor should not be overlooked as the location of your work can have a very huge impact on your salary. Someone working for 10 years at one place can earn as much as $90,000 per year while someone else working for same amount of time in some other place can only make $75,000.

Although these factors affect the salary of an ultrasound technician to a large extent, the salary is decent even for a beginner. And it increases even further as your experience increases. So given the decent and stable income, and bright future, this profession is one of the best in the medical industry.
